Why is This So Hard for Us?

Reopening During the New Normal


Within just a few weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered live events in the United States, robust treatises such as the Event Safety Alliance Reopening Guide started to be released about how to mitigate the new risks in a reasonably healthy and safe way.  A consensus quickly emerged around the importance of three things: social distancing, face covering, and hand washing.  Yet, anywhere Americans were allowed to exercise their own discretion, they abused it, forcing events to stay closed far longer than necessary.  This session will explore what we have learned from these self-inflicted wounds, and how smart event professionals can apply that knowledge to safely hold events during this “new normal.”

Steven Adelman, Event Safety Alliance

Steven A. Adelman is head of Adelman Law Group, PLLC and Vice President of the Event Safety Alliance. His law practice focuses on risk and safety at live events throughout North America, and he serves as an expert witness in crowd-related lawsuits.  

Steve Adelman is widely recognized as an authority regarding event safety and security.  He is principal author of the authoritative Crowd Management standard in the United States, ANSI ES1.9-2020. He was lead author of the Event Safety Alliance Reopening Guide, which has been translated into nearly a dozen foreign languages. He is a law school professor teaching “Risk Management in Venues,” author of the “Adelman on Venues” blog and “Ask Steve” video series explaining legal issues at live events, and he frequently appears in national and local media analyzing safety and security incidents at public accommodations.

Kelli Kopec, Cvent

Kelli Kopec joined Cvent in 2019 as a Product Marketer dedicated to marketing solutions that connect Event Professionals and Travel Managers to hotels and venues. Kelli most recently spent 8+ years working for a hotel management company, managing both group and leisure business for several international hotel brands. She has vast experience in B2C and B2B marketing, launching new brands and products, and planning large scale in-person events...and certainly understands the value technology can bring!

 

Jason Askew, Cvent

Jason has 12 years of experience as an enterprise conference and exhibit manager with a strong focus on technology. He is currently the Product Marketing Manager for Attendee Engagement & Onsite Solutions at Cvent. Before joining Cvent in 2016, he worked internationally with Schneider Electric, not only on their events but their entire event technology footprint from mobile apps to attendee tracking. He has spent his entire life tinkering with computer technology starting with programming on the Commodore 64. He is still building his own PC’s, emulators, smart home network, and servers. Technology has always been very easy for him to understand, however, evangelizing it to others is critical in driving adoption and ultimately making people’s lives easier as we progress. When Jason isn't sharing his love for event technology, he loves flying planes and traveling with his wife, son, and dog.

 

Ken Fisken, Argent Event Production, LLC

Ken Fisken is the owner of Argent Event Production, LLC, based in Brisbane, CA, a provider of event production and labor services throughout the Bay Area.

He is a twenty-three year veteran in the event production field, including 13 years as General Manager and CFO of Stage II Design & Production. Principal duties have included project management, proposal estimates and invoice generation, crew management and scheduling of equipment, supplies and logistics. He was with Stage II from its inception in 2002 until he formed Argent Event Production in mid 2015.

Previous experience includes First Call Production Services, a company also involved in event production, working first as a general stage hand, then crew supervisor. Prior to his career in event production, he worked in political fundraising and grass roots lobbying for several statewide trade associations representing the banking, medical and real estate industries.

He graduated in 1980 from California State University, Northridge, with a BS degree in Business Administration, and has lived in San Francisco since 1989.
