Diversity! Why it's not a trivial game between opponents but a strategy to help us all win!

Diversity in the workplace often sounds good but rarely gets addressed properly. Why? Unfortunately, most initiatives end up creating opponents rather than allies causing all of us to lose. Even those who seem to be winning. Let's discuss how to avoid trivial games and determine measurable goals that create change.

"Diversity!" as a classic game show -- with a twist. What if you already had the answers to implementing a D&I initiative in your workplace? What if the questions you ask form relationships and not walls? Three contestants, including a champion for diversity in your organization compete in six categories and in three rounds (with each round's "answers" being worth an increased bottom line). In the third round, "Implementing Diversity," the contestants can name their own priorities -- as long as they're measurable and inclusive. If a player finishes the second round with zero dollars, they receive a complimentary consultation to help them or their company properly "Implement Diversity."

Diversity Contestants

Rachel Jacob-Barnett
Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture

Rachel Jacob Barnett (or RJB to her friends) grew up in Texas where she began her professional career as a K-5 Elementary School Music Educator in Austin. In 2015, she and her husband moved to the Bay Area, where she transitioned her skills guiding kids and parents at school seamlessly into managing clients and vendors at events. As a recent transplant knowing very few people in the area, Rachel expanded her network quickly by visiting industry associations and eventually found the best fit with the International Live Events Association’s Northern California Chapter (ILEA NCC). From newbie to rising leader in the events world, our incoming President Rachel continues to blaze an inspiring trail. She loves traveling with her husband Nick, cooking, cinema, and helping others find their passion.

Ersson Bartle
Love in the Mix

Ersson Bartle joined Love in the Mix as the first employee in 2011. What started as a single-op Wedding DJ business has grown over the last 8 years into a complete music entertainment, lighting and A/V production company for a wide range of events. An ILEA member since 2014, Ersson has participated in every committee and served on the board of directors for the past three years. Her perspective on diversity draws from experiences as a female DJ in a male dominated profession, a member of the LGBTQ community, and a lifelong commitment to unlearning implicit biases.

Robert Leyva
AFR Furniture Rental

A Native of CA, raised in San Diego and a Bay Area local for the last 16 years. Without realizing it, I actually began my Events Industry career back with Clear Channel Communications beginning as an intern for the Promotions Team and eventually becoming the Promotions Coordinator reporting directly to our Marketing Manager. Then several years ago while living in Las Vegas, I had an opportunity to re-enter the Events Industry and I jumped at it and quickly joined the Event Organizations. Then I decided to move back to The Bay three years ago with my position as Account Executive with AFR Furniture Rental. I currently cover SSF, San Francisco and Marin Counties offering furniture for all Corporate and Social Events with some pretty great clients along with my AWESOME Life Saving Coordinator, Joanne Si.
